Exploring Anakeesta: A Journey Through Gatlinburg's Natural Wonderland

It sits on 70 acres of beautiful mountains 600 feet above the quaint downtown of Gatlinburg, TN.    Gatlinburg, TN attracts many visitors from all over the world as they travel to visit the great smoky mountains National Park which sees approximately 12 million people annually.

Visitors will have a few options for getting to the top of Anakeesta mountain:

  1. Scenic Chondola Ride: One of the most popular ways to reach Anakeesta is by taking the scenic Chondola or chair lift ride. The Chondola is a combination chairlift and gondola system that takes visitors from the base of the mountain to the summit where the park is located. The ride offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape and is an attraction in itself.

The Chondola ride is like what you would expect at a ski slope and can fit 4 riders at a time on a chair lift.  The Chondola line was nonexistent, and riders were walking up and getting on with no wait at all. There is a lap bar and we watched plenty of children get on and off with no issue.

  2. Ridge Rambler: We opted to ride Ridge Rambler (enclosed gondola cabins) since it is fully enclosed.  With our youngest family member being 3 we did not feel comfortable with the Chondola option.  The Ridge Rambler was such a fun experience going up and down the mountain.  The only downside of the Ridge Rambler was the wait. There are not as many Ridge Ramblers available and there were many families in line.  We had to wait for 45 minutes to get a Ridge Rambler. I will note that we went in June during peak season. The wait would likely be nowhere close to that in other months and seasons.  Once we got up the top of a mountain, it was well worth the wait but it was extremely hot and we were not prepared for that wait.  I highly recommend riding the Chondola if you can.

  3. Shuttle Service: Anakeesta also offers a shuttle service from downtown Gatlinburg to the Chondola base station. You can park your car in downtown Gatlinburg and then take the shuttle to the base of the mountain to begin your journey up to Anakeesta.

Smoky Mountain views Anakeesta

The best time of year to visit Anakeesta in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, largely depends on your personal preferences and what you hope to experience during your visit. Here's a breakdown of what each season offers:

  1. Spring (March to May): Spring is a beautiful time to visit Anakeesta as the mountains come alive with blooming wildflowers and lush greenery. The weather is typically mild, making it perfect for outdoor activities like hiking, ziplining, and exploring the treetop skywalk. However, keep in mind that spring is also a popular time for tourists, so the park may be more crowded.

  2. Summer (June to August): Summer brings warmer months and longer daylight hours, making it an ideal time for outdoor adventures at Anakeesta. Visitors can enjoy ziplining through the canopy, strolling along the treetop skywalk, and taking in panoramic views from the AnaVista Tower. However, summer is peak tourist season in Gatlinburg, so be prepared for larger crowds and longer wait times for attractions. We visited during the summer and it was crowded but still very manageable.

  3. Fall (September to November): Fall is arguably one of the best times to visit Anakeesta, as the surrounding mountains are ablaze with vibrant fall foliage. The crisp, cool air and stunning autumn colors create a picturesque backdrop for outdoor activities. Visitors can also enjoy seasonal events and festivals in Gatlinburg during this time.

  4. Winter (December to February): Winter can be a magical time to visit Anakeesta, especially if you enjoy snowy landscapes and cozy winter activities. While some outdoor attractions may be closed or limited due to weather conditions, visitors can still enjoy the scenic Chondola ride and take in the snowy vistas from the AnaVista Tower. Additionally, Gatlinburg hosts festive holiday events and decorations throughout the winter season.

Ultimately, the best time to visit Anakeesta depends on your preferences for weather, crowds, and seasonal activities. Whether you prefer the vibrant colors of fall, the warmth of summer, or the tranquility of winter, Anakeesta offers something special year-round.  As with most travel destinations, weekdays are a great time to visit this unique outdoor experience.

Once at the top, guests are greeted by a variety of attractions and amenities, including:

  1. Treetop Skywalk: Once you jump off of the chondola at the entrance of Anakeesta the fun really begins.  Your family will be able to enjoy the longest tree-based walk,Treetop Skywalk, in North America.  We took our time as we navigated new heights on a treetop rope walk spanning 880 feet more than 50 feet above the forest floor.   Not a big fan of heights?  Do not worry - the sky bridges feel safe and sturdy as you stop to look around at the 360-degree views of the Smoky Mountains with your entire family.    Take your time walking and sitting on this treetop rope bridges skywalk, because it is nothing like you will see anywhere else.  This was the best part of Anakeesta and I could have easily stayed here all day.A series of suspended bridges and platforms that allow visitors to stroll through the canopy of the forest, offering panoramic views of the mountains and valleys below.  This popular attraction offers stunning views of the Smoky mountains and offers the perfect place along the skywalk to stop and take it all in above the forest floor.

  2. Dueling Zipline Adventure: An exhilarating ziplining experience that sends participants soaring through the treetops at high speeds, providing an adrenaline-pumping thrill and stunning aerial views as you race side-by-side.

If you want to take your adventures to a new level, be sure to add on tickets to the dueling ziplines adventure.  You can enjoy the scenery as you and family go zip lining through the trees with family and friends for the thrill seekers in your group.  You will have a staff guide as you navigate the mountains and trees on an zip lines experience that you will be sure to never forget.  The tickets for this experience are a 59.99 additional cost but are great for all ages.

  3. Children's Treehouse Village Playground: A whimsical playground area where kids of all ages can explore treehouses, rope bridges, and other imaginative structures, fostering a sense of wonder and adventure.

Treehouse Village playground Adventure - this is the cutest toddler friendly and great for elementary aged children too, mountain treetop climbing area.  The treehouses are all connected with rope bridges with climbing challenges.  It is small but perfect for young adventurers.

  4. AnaVista Observation Tower: A towering observation platform that offers 360-degree views of the surrounding mountains, including iconic landmarks such as Mount LeConte and Clingmans Dome. Explore new heights at what feels like the top of the world with the whole family.  It is a lot of steps, but worth it once you are at the top of the mountain with a bird's eye view.

  5. BearVenture and TreeVenture Challenge Course

BearVenture and TreeVenture interactive Challenge Course was a huge hit, especially with my children.  There are fun aspects of these tree houses like an obstacle course and physical components to climbing through these courses to get out wiggles!  Spanning various stories with ladders and a slide, this is a great stop for adults to adventure alongside your children or grab an adult beverage and watch them explore!

  6. Rail Runner Mountain Coaster -

There is a single rail mountain coaster ready for you and your friends to speed down the track with 1,600 feet of downhill fun!  You can ride tandem on a second mountain coaster on the mountain coaster for younger riders in your party.  Be aware that tickets for this mountain coaster are in addition to tickets for Anakeesta and cost 14.99 for a single rider and 18.99 if you are doing a tandem rider.  The lines can get pretty lengthy for the mountain coaster as it is a popular attraction especially during peak travel times.

  7. Gem Mining -

The boys absolutely loved mining for gems while at Anakeesta. You can purchase prefilled bags from staff that are located directly to the right of the Gem Mining area.  We purchased a medium sized bag for the boys to share and it was perfect for them.  They got beautiful gems and loved a break from walking in the shade while digging.  I highly recommend this as an add on experience while at Anakeesta.

  8. Splash Pad -

The anakeesta Splash Pad was absolutely a life saver since we happened to be visiting Gatlinburg, TN during record breaking July temperatures.  The splash pad is small and located near  elevated dining experience restaurant and bars.  It was a great place to cool off during a hot day!  I packed bathing suits for the boys and they changed in the restrooms located directly in front of the splash pad which is perfect for families with multiple small children like ours.

What are the Dining Options at Anakeesta?

  • Cliff Top Restaurant - We ate dinner at Cliff Top and had the most amazing service and experience at Anakeesta.  The food was divine, our waiter was so friendly and helpful, and the views were breathtaking.  We ate inside since it was insanely hot the day we were there and had an outstanding view as we were eating while cooling off. I had a mouthwatering burger, the boys devoured their chicken nuggets and grilled cheeses and Parks loved his salad.  Do not forget to grab a beverage and sit back and take in those Smoky Mountain views.

  • The Bar at the Top of The World You must add this to your stop while at Anakeesta.  You will never be able to grab an adult beverage while taking in these kind of views anywhere else.

  • Pearl’s Pie in the Sky If you are anything like me and are always thinking about dessert and sweet treats, then Pearl’s Pie in the Sky is the place to be!

What is the Pricing of Anakeesta?

Anakeesta general admission tickets are available to purchase online and are good for 1 year after purchase.  Adult tickets are for ages 12-59 and cost $34.99 and children ages 4-11 are $22.99 and Seniors: 60+ tickets are $27.99

Kids 3 and under are free and do not require a ticket.

Tickets purchased at the ticket booth one hour before close, gives you access to the park the following day for free.  I would not recommend this option with small children.  The wait to get up to the attractions for with an enclosed Ridge Rambler can take a while and by the time you get up your hour would be almost over.  If you were visiting as adults only this could be a great way to head up on the Chondola grab a drink or a bite to eat before closing and then be able to head back the next day too.
